Inception and Early Years: Birth of Interlagos
The Interlagos circuit’s story began in 1926 when the land was initially acquired for a housing development. After the 1929 stock market crash, the plan shifted, and construction for the racing circuit began in 1938. The track was inaugurated on May 12, 1940, and drew inspiration from famous circuits like Brooklands (UK) and Roosevelt Raceway (USA). The name “Interlagos,” meaning “between lakes,” reflects its location between two artificial lakes in São Paulo.

1980s Relocation: A Brief Move to Rio de Janeiro
Due to safety concerns, including a bumpy surface and inadequate barriers, the Brazilian Grand Prix was moved to the Jacarepaguá circuit in Rio de Janeiro during the 1980s. Despite its absence, it remained iconic in the hearts of fans.
1990s Return and Modern Modifications
In 1990, the race returned with significant upgrades, including the addition of the famous Senna S corner. The track saw further resurfacing and safety improvements, particularly with the £22 million renovation in 2024, which enhanced pit lanes, paddocks, and guardrails. In honor of Ayrton Senna, a special ceremony was held in 2024, celebrating his legacy at this legendary circuit.
